I know usually it isn't worth it but I would like to be able to overclock to further future proof my computer. I use the computer almost exclusively for gaming. It currently has a 6700 non k and a GTX 1080. I feel the upgrade to 7700k or 7600k would make sense. Especially since all I would have to do is swap them out, right? My only concern is that my power supply is only I think 450 watts. Is there much of a difference between the two for power consumption and what about if I overclock. So being a little bit of a noob my question is do you guys think that it's worth it, Will it really be as simply as swap them and for the computer to be future proof mainly for gaming does 7600k or 7700k make sense.

I think your motherboard will need a bios update, to use the newer CPU. Is it worth it? That depends, are you noticing you are suffering from a lack of CPU power? I doubt it, since you have a fairly recent i7.

As for 'future proofing' that makes no sense to me. Why buy something now, for use in the future, when you have no way of knowing what you'll need in that future? For all you know, that 6700 will last you the next 5 years and your videocard will be the component that needs upgrading. Are you just itching to spend money?

A quality 450W is fine for a stock system. I'd want more power for an overclocked system. You don't want your power supply carrying a heavier load than it needs to be carrying. As it is, 450W is kind of low for a GTX 1080 based system.

Ya. It is a good CPU still. Just that I can not overclock on it. It seems like it would be much of a cost difference since I could sell the 6700 and that would basically pay for a 7600k or just spend a little extra and get 7700k. But ya. Im more worried if it would work properly or not and if there was anything else id need to do. I would only be overclocking CPU slightly. 4.5 or so
