How much better is the i7 4790 compared to the xeon w3565? I got a dell precision t3500 for free and it has the xeon in it, i'm probably going to sell it though

The T3500 is an X58 LGA1366 machine. It only supports 1st gen. i7 CPUs. The best ones are the i7-990X,980X, or the similar W3690/3680 32nm 6 core CPUs. X5680/5690 are also poular. It also supports many 4 core Nehalems and equivalent Xeons which can be very inexpensive. W3570,3580,5580,5590 are good choices.

Also this one.

It has support for 2 GPUs, and also 3 channel DDR3 memory which allows it to keep up with much newer systems.
For hardcore gamers it even has PS2 mouse, and keyboard ports for hair trigger (hardwired) response.

4790 is much faster.

That depends on what software you are running. I have an unlocked W3680 in my T3500 and in some tasks, it is very competitive when overclocked. ThrottleStop lets you increase the multiplier for these unlocked CPUs.
