There is no way to be for sure without knowing the mother. If you can tell me the mother model I can look up the CPU support list. I can tell you the Athlon 64 FX had the highest clock rate but not all motherboard's supported them all due to nm changes in gens. IE it was developed with 90nm and later models featured 65nm.

Here is the list -- http://support.asus.com.cn/cpusupport/list.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=8&s=17&m=P2-M2A690G&os=10&hashedid=o1imTupFf8NoqOdg You could get a slower quad or triple core, but you really can't do much of an upgrade. If you find a cheap Phenom X4 9600 then you could get quad core. The clock speed will be lower. I would save my money for a new system rather than patch this old dog ...
