CPU stuck in overclock?

So I have the i7-8700k and it should be running at a speed of 3,7GHz. I once clicked the OC Genie button in my BIOS which overclocked it to 4,7GHz. Later I turned it off but the overclock itself seems to still be there, now I'm panicing because my CPU's very hot (100 degrees Celsius and 60 degrees idle).

My cooler is the Cryorig H7.

Edit: Fixed it by overclocking to 4.2 instead of auto.
Edit: Did not fix it.
Edit: Some of my fans where either not working or facing the wrong way, fixed it after fixing them.

Make sure that the CPU cooler is properly mounted and has adequate air flow.

What is your CPU Vcore? The motherboard applied default Vcore may be too excessive.


How do you know that the problem persists? What are you using to monitor the frequency of each of the processor's cores?

The Base Frequency of the Intel Core i7-8700K is 3.70 GHz at stock clock settings.

The Max Turbo Frequency of the Intel Core i7-8700K is 4.70 GHz at stock clock settings.

I'm using CoreTemps and I check the Task Manager, though I don't know what Max Turbo Frequency means.
Anyways I fixed it by overclocking the CPU to 100 x 42 and now it all seems stable and the temps are under 70 degrees.

Base frequency is all cores/threads, basically when the cpu is under load conditions, it'll use base frequency as it's operating speed. Turbo is a bios setting, enabled by default, it's set by the cpu. What it does is allow the cpu to take individual cores far higher than base frequency, according to its settings. So running 1-2 threads you'd see max turbo speeds of 4.7GHz, but running 3-4 threads that'll drop down to 4.6GHz, 5-6 threads will be 4.5GHz etc. The cpu limits turbo speeds to reduce voltage needs from the cpu, and consequently reduces possible temps.

By applying a solid 4.2GHz, you've reduced performance across the board for all threads, so maximum attainable speeds will be 4.2GHz no matter what turbo wants.

Reset cmos/bios/OC to default values is easy. At boot, enter bios. Most normally it's F5 that will reset the bios to optimal default settings. If for some reason you can't do that, look on your motherboard, somewhere usually near the gpu slot is a watch battery. Unplug the pc from the wall, push/hold power button for 10 seconds, remove the battery, count to 60, put battery back in, plug power back in.

Before I set it to 4.2GHz the CPU's turbo was 4.7 I believe and it ran extremely hot, something like 95 degrees celsius.
Should I let it be like that or keep my solid 4.2?

 


Processor Base Frequency
Processor Base Frequency describes the rate at which the processor's transistors open and close. The processor base frequency is the operating point where TDP is defined.

Max Turbo Frequency
Max turbo frequency is the maximum single core frequency at which the processor is capable of operating using Intel Turbo Boost Technology.

TDP
Thermal Design Power (TDP) represents the average power, in watts, the processor dissipates when operating at Base Frequency with all cores active under an Intel-defined, high-complexity workload. The i7-8700K's TDP is 95 Watts.

You haven't fixed it. You shouldn't be getting any overheating when operating with stock base and turbo clocks.
