Thinking about reusing old parts/budget pc build

Hello all,

I've had this computer for years: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883114102&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-VigLink2-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=12087162&PID=8167372&SID=je1reo60xz000a1705278&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-VigLink2

About a year ago I even upgraded the memory and installed a SSD. (I know it seems silly; but there was absolutely nothing wrong with the computer and its all I needed).

A few months ago, the thing died on me and it wont do anything, it will not turn on, will not "post", etc. I swapped/took out parts and nothing seems to make a difference, I can't even get anything on the monitor. My best guess is that it's possibly the motherboard and/or something that makes it not worth it to fix, given that its an old eMachines. I figured it was about time to upgrade and bought a new PC with Windows 10.

Sorry to ramble on, just trying to tell the whole story.

Now this leaves me with a bunch of old computer parts, not only from that computer but from stuff I've had lying around. I have:

-AMD Athlon II X2 220 2.8 ghz
-Heatsink/fan from old eMachines
-1TB Seagate SATA hard drive
-6GB DDR3 memory
-Brand new 450w power supply
-Cheap case (sitting in my garage, bought it years ago)
-DVD drive from old eMachines

So, the only thing I would need is a new motherboard...? I figured maybe I could build a cheap budget pc and repurpose some old parts? Seems like a waste of decent (old) parts. I'm just not sure if its worth it, or if there would even be a cheap motherboard available.

Also, this would be my first build. I've taken apart old worthless computers many times before and put them back together, and put parts into working computers, but never actually built one from scratch. I'm pretty much an amateur, so I would need to figure out what parts would/wouldnt work with any motherboard I get. I'm not even sure what "socket" I would need?

Thanks for any/all advice.

Solution

AM3+ should be backwards compatible, when youre buying a mobo, search if your cpu is supported. That built in graphics is on the old motherboard, and newer chipsets dont have it.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully I can get a cheap mobo- I don't want to spend a ton of money on this, but I feel bad letting good parts collect dust.

So a new motherboard would work my older AMD Athlon chip? Also, I could probably get built in graphics..?

Just look for an AM3+ mobo since they probably are in stock everywhere. You cant get built in graphics because your processor doesnt support it, you need a discrete graphics card.

Seems weird, since the computer had built in graphics anyways.. Also, I noticed the old mobo says "Socket AM2".

I didn't think my CPU would be compatible with AM3+ motherboard? Unless I'm missing something.

Thanks!
