Temp issues and overclocking

I've had temp issues for a while and I'm finally at the point where I have time to try and look into my issues. This is probably going to be a longer thread but if you are willing to help me learn and figure out whats going on I would greatly appreciate it. Everything I know is just from trying to learn things from the internet.

This is an old thread of mine but it still has some relevance to my current problem. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3061593/system-instability-issues.html.

I feel like my temps are not normal for my hardware. I may have waited to long to look at this problem but if need be I'll get new parts. I have been running completely stock bios and same for settings for the 980ti. I would like to overclock but I don't fell as if my system is super stable as is.

My System: i7 6700k, Corsair h100i v2, Asus Maximus VIII Formula,16gb of g.skill RAM, MSI GTX 980ti Gaming 6g. NZXT H440 (no side panels and I'm switching to Meshify soon)

I used HWMonitor for temps and things and it is up to date
aslo my room temp is usually about 68ºF or 20ºC
Temps for CPU that I've gotten:
BIOS:

  • Temp:38ºC
    Volts: 1.264
Idle:

  • Temp:30ºC avg. but would occasionally jump to like 45 but not sure why
Volts:0.850 but would randomly spike to 1.30ish occasionally
Load:

  • Cinebench("5 back 2 back runs")
    Temp:73ºC
    Volts:1.312
RealBench Stress test (" I get barely a frame per second on the desktop while its running")
    Temp:83ºC
    Volts:1.28

Temps for GPU that I've gotten:
Idle:

  • Temp:57ºC
    Clock Speed: 135MHz
    Mem Speed: 405
Load:

  • Time Spy Extreme
    Temp:83ºC
    clockspeed:1265
    mem speed:3506

Like I said, these numbers just seem really off. I have applied thermal paste 10 different times to the CPU with no noticeable change in temps. I'm not sure why my GPU temps are high as well. I'm trying to learn and like I said if I did something wrong then I will learn from it. I would like to overclock if possible but it seems like I might have some hardware issues but I'm not really sure. If you can offer any ideas or help I would greatly appreciate it! If you need or want more information let me know.

For starters, what is your fan configuration like inside of the case? air flow plays a big part in cooling the GPU. Is your H100i on the front of the case pulling air in? or is it set on the top of the case to push air out? If it's set as intake on the front switch it to the top and flip the fans accordingly to push air out. If it's already on the top, make sure it is pushing air out and not sucking it in. To top this all off, if you have it set to the top or need to put it there, you then would need to make sure you have some fans on the front as intake.

Next, open up MSI Afterburner (download it if you don't have it) and manually set the fan speeds on the GPU to 50% for starters and see if the temps lower.

As for your CPU, you should be getting lower temps than that when using Cinebench. Open up Corsair Link (download it if you don't have it) and make sure that your pump speeds are set to maximum and then adjust your fan curve for temps. set your curve to 40% fans at 45c and below and go up in steps from there. You're fan and pump speeds can impact performance heavily with an AIO.

Don't worry about the stress test on the CPU, those temps look normal but they could potentially be lower depending.

Thank you for getting to this so quickly! I do have my rad in the top and the fans are oriented correctly for that. As far as airflow goes it's not super great right now. That's why I'm getting a different case and new fans to go with it. I had 3 fans in the front for intake and one in the back plus the rad fans pushing air out. Two of my front fans broke for whatever reason and about the same time as well. I have had the side panels off since but I wanted a new case anyways and I like the Meshify so I'm getting that plus some good fans. I don't think it should be too bad right now though with the side panels off. and one fan in the front and one in the back.

I did have Afterburner. I just manually set the fan to 50. My temp went up 2 degrees to about 85 degrees and my clock speed dropped to about 1139. I think my fan speed was at 100% for the numbers I had originally. Which is why it seems weird to me that my temps are so high. Also isn't 57 pretty high even for a GPU at idle?

I also had Corsair Link but I'll be honest I don't really know how to use it. I'm also confused because directly above the pump it has "H100i Fan" but it says 0 rpm even though the fans are currently spinning. But, there are 2 fans above that aways and aren't case fans and have to be the rad fans. They are moving the same speed. I just double checked and the rad fans are plugged into the splitter fan connector thing coming out of the pump and the pump is plugged into the CPU fan header and the USB is also plugged into a USB header on the mobo. If you click on the fan thing above the pump you can see a fan curve but the 2 that actually show rpms you can't set a curve for. I did set the curve like you said for the one that let me. I also didn't see a way to set the pump to 100% but I did change it from quiet to performance.

I'm using an MSI aftermarket, the fans were not at 100% for the idle temps. I should have specified that. I meant they were at 100% for the load temps. I don't know how fast they were moving at idle. Also, the temps came down to like 38 at idle but it took like 4 hours of just sitting there(I checked like every half hour).
