I tried to connect both my USB stick and then my external hard drive to our Samsung E360 dvd player but it's not reading anything through usb, it starts loading and then jy stops.

The manual does not say anything for USB support, but being 2012 unit, I would not be surprised it is limited to eg 2/4gb sticks.
As for hard drive- the HDDs need more power than the USB sticks, so you either need powered HDD, or use smaller sticks only.
