Hey everyone,

I wanted to buy a new Modem/Router lately but in the description of them in stores etc, VDSL2 or ADSL2 gets mentioned. I have a VDSL(50down/5up) connection not a VDSL2. Are those 2 different things? I'm just worried that i'll spend like 100e and end up with a device that won't be compatible with my connection. What should i look for when i buy my modem/router?

Thanks in advance, appreciate it!

Does your ISP provide a list of compatible devices? Most ISPs do. That is the first resource to utilize.

IMO, don't purchase a modem/router combo. Get a modem and standalone router. Why? Router functionality changes much faster than the type of ISP connection you have. If you have a large area to cover, think about a wired router and separate WIFI access points that you can have dispersed in your house.

Start with your ISP - always a good idea to take a look at any list of supported devices.

Then familiarize yourself with the terminologies involved. Some stuff is just "marketing speak".

As for VDSL2 and ADSL2 just google:

I used "VDSL2 versus ADSL2" as the search criteria (Past Year). Found a variety of links.

For example: "https://www.versatek.com/blog/most-frequently-asked-vdsl2-questions/

What you want to look for is a modem/router that your ISP supports (meaning that they cannot completely blame the manufacturer if there is a problem of some sort).

What you also want to do is to understand everything you can about your current connections and devices. What specifications and standards are being used?

Look at the wires, the filters/splitters, how it is all connected.

Go online and read the User Guides/Manuals for the modem/routers you have in mind. Check diagrams, the installation and operation procedures. Visit the manufacturer's Forums and FAQs. Learn what other people are saying and asking about.

All you need is some additional knowledge to get a sense of it all. Then you will be able to make a purchase decision.
