Have an FX-4130 in an M5A97 LE R2.0 and I'm looking to squeeze some more life out of this computer so hoping I can upgrade CPU to something like an FX 6 series or 8 series and get something along the lines of a GTX 760. However, I've seen people say that this board isn't powerful enough for an FX 8 series or 6 series. I'm not looking to do any OCing as I know this board can't handle it, but does anyone know if this board can handle a CPU upgrade and if I should go with 8 series or 6 series

A CPU like this (the first thing I clicked not a suggestion)
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA85V4M62921&cm_re=FX_8-_-19-113-284-_-Product
Has in its specifications

32 nm
125W
Am3+ soecket
and 8 cores

You can use information such as this when you check parts for compatibility. If there are any exceptions some people more experienced with AMD CPUs may be able to help you out right before you make your purchase.

You may want to upgrade your firmware before removing your old CPU because sometimes when you upgrade to a newer CPU, the old firmware may not be optimized or meant to run with the newer. Usually updating it solves any potential problems there.

Also do you currently have a GPU?

What resolution do you play in and what kind of games do you like playing? I think with the current market, the GTX 760 isn't to bad of a deal. The 700 series is generally a good option since it's really bad at mining cryptocurrencies. I looked online and it seemed like people were saying the GTX 760 should be able to do 30-45 fps at 1080p with medium-high settings without anti aliasing with newish games.

I currently use a GTX 780 for gaming which is able to get 60 fps with max settings in 1080p. Only some games like Forza horizon 3 have made me reduce settings.

Also one thing I mentioned before, but probably wasn't specific enough about. the firmware I was referring to earlier is the motherboard bios. you can usually find a bios from the motherboard manufactuere's website, put it on a usb, then go into the bios and navigate to the flash bios area. I suggest having a flash drive with only the bios file and nothing else. it reduces room for error since any mistakes in the bios flashing process will break your motherboard.

And the last thing to think about is probably the age of your PSU. If you're trying to get your old PC to last a few more years you may want to think about how old your PSU is. I suggest looking at the manufacturers warranty and replacing it soon after the warranty expires. If the PSU fails it can damage other components, so if you put any expensive parts in your computer, don't overlook your PSU's age. A lot of times you can get them for a good price if you wait for a newegg sale.

Thanks for the tip. I'm hoping for 1080p mediumish settings and I dont think I have to worry about the psu. Its a 600w seasonic that I believe is semi-recent
