Ryzen 5 1600, Intel I5 8400 or Intel I7 8700 for 144hz 1080p?

I’m planning to buy one of these cpus together with a gtx 1070, but which one will work the best on 1080p 144hz? I don’t mind turning down settings, but would like to use this build for a good 2/3 years

get the best your budget will allow and then enjoy the purchase.
I dreaded the expense of buying my 955 black 8 years ago and she is still humming along. CPUs should not age as fast as GPUs. the old 955 black has seen 6 GPUs over the years

the GPU will be the workhorse for 144hz

I would go with the i5 8400. Intels single core performance is way above ryzens which is important for modern gaming. And if you are planning to do mostly gaming the extra cores and threads from the i7 won’t do too much for you. Out of all 3, the i5 is just the best value for performance gaming wise imo.

The GPU will be the workhorse only if the CPU is able to keep up with the GPU....; there was a 144 hz gaming comparison, and, although the R5-1600 kept up in most games, it would occasionally have it's minimums fail to keep up or meet 144 hz in a few games....

If ponying up 144 Hz gaming GPU money (GTX1070 or above), best to get enough CPU as well....

I’m not planning to upgrade for like 5 years. And i have a great prebuilt pc im looking at rn with the I7 8700. You said i5 8400 would be better, but can the I7 8700 handle for a while?

A common misconcetion is that the "K" model *must* be oeverclocked, but, many forget these models are clocked higher than non-K models. But, they do require a cooler be purchased. (The past year, I've seen many folks recommend the 7700 over the 7700K even when the price difference was only $10....; as though overclockability was the only difference...it is not.)

The 8600K is a monster without overclocking as well.....; with an Asus MB (XMP and MCE on) and an a good cooler, all 6 cores at 4.3 GHz should provide a very nice gaming experience. The ability to go above 4.3 GHz later is your choice, but, certainly not mandatory or required.

The 8600K does require a good cooler though, so it does have that downside/expense....figure another $70-$85 for some sort of good Noctua sink/fan.....

Thanks for the reply! But i just found a really good value prebuilt game pc where i live. It has the gtx 1070 and an I7 8700. I hope to be sweet for a while with that.
