As per the title really. I know 4GB isn't a huge amount today, but I may just be able to afford a Strix RX470 (used!). I have a 2k monitor and wondered what, if any, games i could expect to run at medium ish settings. I'm not an experienced gamer by a long shot, so don't expect the world from this card.

Many thanks

Edit: sorry, i meant 1440p (i thought 2k and 1440p were the same, but it appears they aren't)

Sometimes, even monitor product descriptions will refer to 1440p as "2K". Technically, actual 2K resolution is only slightly higher than 1080p (2048x1080) but very few screens actually use that resolution.

I would say that an RX 470 is not really a particularly great card for 1440p. With most recent games, you would need to turn settings down a fair amount to get 1440p running at close to 60fps on that card. If you were fine with reduced settings and lower frame rates than it might be okay though. It's definitely more a card designed with 1080p in mind though.

And what kind of price is this RX 470? Due to a graphics card shortage...

And what kind of price is this RX 470? Due to a graphics card shortage going on right now caused by to cryptocurrency mining, the prices for graphics cards are much higher than usual, and AMD's cards tend to be affected a bit more by the price increases than Nvidia's.

390 is going to have similar performance to 470. As far as games I wouldn't say release before/after gpu was released is what to look at, instead think of games as either demanding (BF1 GTA5 Wildlands) or not as demanding (Overwatch CS:Go Rocket League).

An R9 390's performance should actually be similar to that of an RX 480, so it will be faster than a 470, with as much as 20% higher frame rates in games when performance is GPU limited. The 300 series cards tend to be more power hungry than the 400/500 series though, so you'll want to make sure your PSU is up to the task.

thanks for the responses guys, i think i'll wait for mining craze to slow before investing. prices are crazy at the mo, even for 2nd hand. cheers for the heads up about cex @madmatt30, but most of those cards seem to be reference and fussy about noise and looks! good prices tho, ta
