2x2 Gb RAM vs 1x8 Gb RAM (less dual channel vs more single channel)

More precisely the question is what is better performance-wise for gaming? To have 4 Gbs dual channel RAM or 8 Gbs single channel RAM? Basically does less dual channel RAM outweigh more RAM but single channel, in this case 2x2 vs 1x8?

I hope my question is understandable and makes sense.

Solution
Dual channel adds ~10% performance at best over single channel. If you need more RAM (gaming?), then 8GB single channel is preferred over 4GB dual channel. When you run low on memory, the OS will start using even slower virtual RAM (HDD). Or won't run at all.

Honestly I just need the RAM to play the Witcher 3 like I used to. I only had 4 Gb of RAM (and the game worked which was a big surprise), but about a year ago one stick stopped working, so I only have 2 Gbs right now... I found some, more or less, affordable single 8 Gb sticks, and was thinking of buying one, instead of buying 2 Gbs for dual channel.
