Hard drive sounds like a bathroom faucet running (also whines)

This is a brand new Seagate Barracuda 3TB and it makes this constant... I don't really know how to describe sound, it's like pipes in an old house's plumbing system, that kind of hissing you might sometimes hear from a refrigerator, or when someone is running an old tap.

If you tilt your ear towards it it also makes a constant whine and a slight buzz. When screwed into the case all these sounds are magnified. But it also makes them just holding it in my hand away from the case, so it's not any vibration that's causing this.

It spins all the time, even though it's not a system drive.

I can't find any actual fault with it. It seems to be working fine, and all tests come back good, but the noise is giving me headaches. Is the noise alone enough to RMA it? And how much of this is normal? I don't recall my last HDD sounding anything like this, it barely made a sound at all.

I heard something like that in a new Sun workstation about 1999-2000 at my job. The drive was exceptionally loud and sounded just like you describe.

It worked perfectly for weeks, except for that noise, which was annoying, but not entirely unbearable.
Then, all at once, it started making an appallingly painful noise - so bad that I had to leave the room - and the system was stuck trying to read from it - it kept spinning and making the noise, but the workstation froze waiting for data... and then the drive was dead.

Get it replaced. If it's not dead now, it WILL be.

All tests with Seatools pass without issue. But the awful sounds remain and even got worse during the long test, with what sounded like pulsating beeps.

Thinking about how hard drives work, this main sound it's making, which I've been comparing to the roaring/hissing of an old immersion heater, I think could only really be caused by the spinning disks scraping against something and then echoing around inside the casing. I see no other explanation for this noise.

Would it be better to RMA it to Seagate or to return it to the shop I bought it from?

Less than 30 days, I think the store will take it back. But, the manual probably says something along the lines of "Do not return it to the place of purchase...." For faster service, attempt to get it exchanged where you bought it. But the Seagate rep might have more to say on that. I'm just speaking on my experience with a previous HDD (different company) that was DOA.

That is ridiculous. If they send the drive back and it's still noisy, I'd take them to small claims court. You easily have the proof (and can teach their tech team a small lesson). On the other hand, maybe they got the RMA numbers mixed up and will send you a good drive. :p
