(Solved below). I have a Samsung PM961 SSD from a laptop that has crashed, and am attempting to install it in my desktop via a PCIe adapter to recover my data. However, I can't find the SSD anywhere on my desktop once installed (via BIOS, my computer, device manager, or disk manager). Can anyone help? The data is extremely important and I'm freaking out (I usually sync it to google drive, but had temporarily disconnected because the files had gotten too large).

The PM961 is connected to a StarTech PEX4M2E1 M.2 Adapter (99% sure it's the right adapter), plugged into my ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO DDR3 2800 LGA 1150 motherboard.

I'm attempting to use default windows drivers because ___ (I'm reading that the PM961 may not have publicly available drivers because it's not a retail model?)?

In device manager, I noticed that the Standard NVM Express Controller has an error (Code 10 device cannot start). This may be part of the problem, but I don't know where to start?

Most of the help articles I see are related to booting Windows from the SSD. I don't want to do this, I'm simply trying to recover my data. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Solution
So this was a driver issue. I've read posts (eg here) indicating that it was indeed a driver issue.

I somehow stumbled across this website in french that had a PM961 driver. Evidently they're not available publicly.

It looks like a semi-sketchy website, so be careful. But I needed to gamble. After downloading the driver and using device manager to use new drivers for the NVME controller (located in "storage controllers", which I had to manually locate the folder for), it automatically updated and displayed my SSD in "my computer" within seconds.
