I just destroyed two SSD's and two hard drives ($300 worth) because I mixed my psu SATA power cables in two different systems. Can't believe I never knew about this issue because I mix my cables all them time! Never have I ruined components, but now I know not to mix cables. Here's the issue, I don't want to just throw out perfectly good power supplies. I have a whole bin of cables for about 6 different psu's and I don't know how to match them back up. I know that it's not simple since they're tabbed differently and each wire provides different voltages. They're all black, some are sleeved. But how can I match them together without killing more drives??

Figured out a way. Just take a regular multimeter, and test for the voltage and ground wires, also check the voltage. Look up a diagram of what (serial SATA power and 24 pin, etc.) connectors should output (3.3V, 5V, 12V, COM (Common/Ground)) and check that with the multimeter. A little trial and error and it's off to the races. Thank god I don't have to toss all of those, too.

Hope I helped some people who also made the same grave mistake.
