I have upgraded my child's computer which includes new memory, motherboard, cpu and Power Supply. We transferred over the hard disks since he had so much data but they are not too old.

His upgraded system is Ryzen 5 1600, 8 GB ram, 600w Power Supply (Corsair), I believe the memory is Corsair Vengeance but will have to look. Initially he was having problems with the aging gpu, or so I thought, an Nvidia GTX 660, but now i'm not so sure it's GPU related at all. I got a new gpu for him, an RX 560 4gb. Problems persist as follows

Random black screen, regardless of what he is doing. It will crash and reset (as he described an error once when it crashed and said it was unable to reset the driver) regularly. He is unable to play games (both with the old and new gpu).

I have updated the bios on the mother board (Gigabyte AB350 Gaming) checked and updated the radeon drivers and the problem, still persists. Looking through forums I have seen various solutions that seem to be hit and miss for a lot of people and I have hit a wall here, and have no idea what to look at.

It is not overclocked. There isn't any kind of overclocking on memory, cpu or gpu at all. Everything is set to the standard default and it's Windows 10.

I'd appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

*note* I've been having some issues with my upgraded computer also but it's not as severe. I'm worried it's related to the Ryzen upgrade since I've upgraded to Ryzen 7 1700 myself with gigabyte ab350 gaming 3 mobo.

Solution
I assume, maybe mistakenly, that any error that causes a black screen would be recognized by memtest

plus, if it "black screens" while running memtest, that would be, to me anyway,a strong indicator it is an issue with the ram, whether incompatibility issue, don't know but at least that would narrow the search down some

Thank you I hadn't thought about whocrashed. I had used this in the past but for whatever reason, It escaped me this time. I will post info if I find anything.

whocrashed result in error in "hardware.sys" and says that it has to do with memory management. Could it be a conflict betwen the ryzen and the type of memory I have?

that's what it initially reported on my black screens, then it went to error in nvidia driver kernal. When whocrashed identified the kernal error, it took me to this thread on GeForce forum https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1035287/nvlddmkm-sys-crashing/?offset=1. In the 3rd post, there's reference to the latest Nvidia drivers being buggy and to go back to the one identified there - interestingly, if you go to nvidia's web, same drivers are used for most of the nvidia gtx line.

Going that route, it seemed to clear the issue for about 3 weeks, then it returned.

after trying a hundred or so (and i kid not), i finally got the bright idea to move my gpu to another rig also running a nvidia gpu, and son of a bmt, the issue showed up there as well.

so i send my gpu back to Zotac under RMA

on the nvidia side, interestingly enough MY computer which periodically has the problem is using nvidia but.. the card isn't likely the problem. on the previous build I transferred the card from the gpu never had a problem on the i7 system. I doubt suddenly the card is bad like that considering this problem is occuring on both computers, my son's and mine. common denominators are Ryzen and possibly memory. I have corsair vengeance 3000 mhz I believe in mine (have to check) and I think because it worked so well on mine previously I got corsair for my son too. He had nvidia gtx 660 which I changed to radeon rx 560 brand new and the problem occured with both old and new gpus.

I am going ot check the memory list now.

ok I have CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 (corsair 16 gb LPX) memory on my computer (the ryzen 7) and my son has 8 gb LPX memory same speed. neither are on the gigabyte qvl list. Thing is in some places I see people saying it shoudl be compatible but based on the list that speed is not. lists 3600 instead. Should I take this as a potential reason for the problem occurring? I mean right now that seems to be an expensive "potential" fix so...

whoops - sorry, i should have re-read your initial description of the issue

on the memory, you can run memtest86 https://www.memtest86.com/ , download the free version

it will show 4 passes, and each pass takes about 1 hour, no need to run all 4 passes - 2 should be fine
and it will report any memory issues

Some times QVLs aren't updated frequently, but the RAM's absence from the list makes it a possibility. I used PCPartPicker to see if anyone else used the RAM I wanted for the same motherboard to see if it works; could be worth checking that way if you can identify the LPX model.

Memtest can check for bad RAM or slots which is worth doing too. (I personally run it for 8 passes for thoroughness.)

i had run memtest86 for 4 passes (on the rig in my signature below), and it took 9 hours. When i mentioned that on the Passmark memtest forum, one of the mods came in and told me what i stated above, that they only run it for 1-2 passes
