The motherboard is a msi 970a-g43 and the cpu is an amd fd8300wmw8khk 2011. I bought a pc without one. I turn it on and it stays on for about 30 seconds then shuts off because of the cpu overheating.

You made an unfortunate purchase.
Your motherboard is not suitable for a FX-8 processor.

As above, you NEED a cooler. You will destroy your chip without one.
Anything is better than nothing.
If your case has 160mm height available, a reasonable cooler is the $35 scythe kotetsu.
It cools better than many high end coolers including the noctua NH-U14s.

Truthfully, if your goal is gaming, do not spend a dime on what you bought.
FX has slow cores for gaming and there is no upside available.
It is essentially obsolete.
My advice is to resell it for what you can get and start over.

Actually he has no problem at all running a 8350 at around 4.5ghz with a decent cooler, not sure where you get that info. Fx chips are not fantastic for 1080p ultra but you can play fine with reduced settings, You can also find combos used for around $150 "8350/MB/RAM" where as a G4560 will start around $200.

Ill side with geofelt here & say no he couldnt run an 8350 at stock on that board let alone overclocked its an awful board & throttles any cpu with more than 100w tdp.

The 8300 however is a downvolted & underclocked 8 core with a 95w tdp & it 'should' work fine.

There is absolutely no point spending much more than $20 on a cooler, those components have plainly been bought on a very tight budget & over clocking is out of the question anyway.
