New PSU causing PC to smoke?

Recently, we built our first (gaming) PC and it actually went fairly well. After all was said and done, the PC seemed to work properly; however, after merely two days of use, it turned off and refused to turn back on. We figured it was probably the PSU (which was the Corsair CX Series 650w 80+ Bronze) and ordered a new one (EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650w 80+ Gold).

With the new PSU we plugged in all the cables and turned it on to test it, but immediately after starting up, the computer began emitting grayish white smoke and making what sounded like a sizzling/crackling noise. It smelled real bad, as you can imagine. That being said, we aren't sure what exactly was the cause of the smoking or where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the CPU power cable has the same number of pins as the...

You didn't by any chance use the Corsair power cables with the EVGA PSU did you?

Modular cables are NOT interchangeable between brands of PSU.
You may have just destroyed your new EVGA PSU. Hopefully, it didn't take any of your other components with it.

No, I definitely didn't mix up the cables, but I wasn't aware of that so I'll keep that in mind in the future. Thanks!

If you didn't use any Corsair cables, are you sure that you used the EVGA cables in their proper position?
I can't think of anything else, short of a faulty EVGA PSU, that would cause it to start smoking.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain I put them all in the correct slots but maybe the one thing I wasn't 100% sure about was the VGA slots on the PSU. I used those to connect the PCI cables to the video card and it's possible that that wasn't correct. I could be remembering wrong but I feel like the origin of the smoke was near the graphics card so I should probably inspect that. Is it also possible that something on the motherboard could have reacted badly to the PSU?

Well, the CPU power cable has the same number of pins as the PCI/E cable used by the GPU, but I don't think that the PSU ends of the cables are interchangeable.

As far as the MB goes, I think that if it was something the MB didn't like, the MB would be the source of the smoke, not the PSU .

Alright, I'll look over all the parts and see if something's weird. Chances are I might have made a mistake, as I'm still relatively new to building. Thanks for your help, dude :)

Hope you get it sorted out, and BTW, Welcome to Tom's!
