My GPU sparked and is now fried. What could've caused it?

I was playing a couple of days ago when my computer suddenly shut down and refused to turn on again.

Whenever i tried to power it back on the fans would give like a half spin and stop, and then pressing the power button would do nothing unless i waited like 10 minutes, then it would do the same again. This had happened once before but the problem fixed itself.

But this time i tried to connect the computer to a different power outlet on my stabilizer, and as soon as i tried to turn the pc on the gpu sparked and could smell burnt components.

Now it i try to power it on without the gpu it starts up fine, then i tried to put the gpu back on just to test since it was already fried, and it sparked yet again.

The GPU is a EVGA gtx 970 ftw;
And my psu is a Corsair CX 600.
If any more info is needed let me know.

I know i'll have to get a new one, but i don't want to risk frying the new one if the cause wasn't the gpu but something else that burned it.

Since you have Corsair PSU, the higher quality Corsair PSUs should be also available at your location. But since there are so many different Corsair PSU models, here's the rundown about their quality:
Corsair VS series PSUs are low quality units and the worst offered by Corsair.
Corsair CS, CX and CXm series are better than VS series but build quality wise, they still are worse than anything offered by Seasonic.
While Corsair AX, AXi, HX, HXi, RMx, RMi, TXm and SF series are on-par with Seasonic PSUs.

Corsair CX series PSUs, at best, are mediocre quality units. As far as what might have happened is that your PSU sent too much voltage to your GPU which caused it to fry. Or the GPU itself was at the end of life and decided to go out with a bang.

If you want to be safe, you can also replace your PSU with much better quality unit. Anything from Seasonic in 500W range will do just fine, e.g S12II-520, M12II-520 EVO, Focus 550 or Focus+ 550,

Focus and Focus+ are the newest PSU lines from Seasonic and they come with 10 years of OEM warranty. S12II and M12II EVO series PSUs come with 5 years of OEM warranty.
All my 3 PCs: Skylake, Haswell and AMD are also powered by Seasonic. Full specs with pics in my sig.

I didn't know they were that bad, i thought they were ok. At first i thought it was a failure by the psu, but since it happened twice i'm thinking that the gpu just decided to die, either that or the psu cables that power on the gpu are gone for good.

Also, do you have any other reccomendations on psus? Seasonic's are kinda hard to come by where i live.
