PC doesn't perform as it did a day ago

I'll try to be brief.

I was gaming Dota maxed out as usual, never had any problems with framerates, partially since I only run 60 fps. I notice I'm getting unstable 40-50 fps, which I thought was a temporary thing. It wasn't. I switched over to PUBG, same settings as usual and I'm struggling to get 30 stable fps. Not only that, but it's stuttering a lot as well.

Last time I had something similar to this I just ran Malwarebytes and found an issue with Java. Now nothing comes up there and I've tried to revert GPU drivers, reinstalling them, DDU, updating again and a regular RAM clean. No difference.

Nothing out of the ordinary looking in task manager, Hardware Monitor or MSI Afterburner. No temps out of range, no unusual load, nothing. No difference in the rest of the PC either.

The only thing that's different is that I installed two audio drivers, but after this I uninstalled them both and everything additionally plugged in was removed.

I really need suggestions on where to start, because I'm all out of ideas. TIA

Solution
Generally if a GPU is failing you will see either graphical artifacts or system crashes. Failing or bad drivers however can cause lag spikes. What I would do is download HWInfo and open up the sensors page. Open a graph and monitor CPU usage and take note when it lag spikes. Look and the graph and see if the CPU is hitting 100% at all around the same time. CPU maxing out is the primary cause of FPS drops in games followed by malfunctioning drivers.

I'd also check out your idle CPU usage in clean boot. Or post a task manager screenshot. If you find things don't add up it could be malware. For example if you had 60% CPU usage on idle with no applications open and the highest usage process as 14%, I'd suspect malware immediately. Malware...

- Check to see if any Windows Updates have installed recently.

- Try and older version of the display driver, using DDU of course.

- Try running a clean boot with all startup items disabled. Background processes or malware is the most likely cause of sudden FPS loss.

No Windows update in 3 weeks, reverting to Nvidias 370.77 which was the last driver I knew worked flawlessly didn't work but the clean boot seemed to almost fix stuff. Now I'm running quite stable but I get some insanse frame drops and stuttering for a couple of second at the time.

UPDATE: It's back and worse than ever. Is my GPU dying?

Malware can hide itself from task manager but it can't hide it's resource usage footprint.

Question from calamitouschris : "Very wierd driver performance issue with audio interface"

A couple of days ago I did a thread about my PC suddenly losing a lot of horsepower. I've narrowed down the issue and boy is it wierd.

I added my audio interface to my PC and that's when I noticed the performance drop. Not immediately, but a day after in the middle of a game. The solution was to boot into safe mode, use DDU and reinstall my Nvidia drivers. But inevitably the problem came back as I still had my interface plugged in. Before reinstalling my Nvidia drivers for the tenth time this week I uninstalled the interface driver and unplugged it and had no performance issue at all.

I realized it was something about the interface so at this point I think I had it all sorted, there's some sort of odd driver incompatibility and I can't have both drivers running. But no. I still want my interface plugged in, so I tried plugging it back in without drivers and tried to install ASIO4ALL to see if the interface still worked and if the Nvidia drivers would be happy. But just having my interface plugged in called upon these performance issues. No drivers at all, just the damn USB cable plugged in.

Has the interface and PC just decided they won't work together and that's that? What can I do to make it work without getting these issues?

Add. info: The performance issues mainly arises during gaming where I get much less frames and insane stuttering depending on the game, a bit of stuttering as well on videos. The interface is a Propellerhead Balance.

TIA

I have never seen an audio interface or any USB device directly cause FPS loss. If the device is plugged into the USB port, Windows will automatically 'install' the device using an on-hand driver if possible. The driver installed is the more likely cause of lag though.

Does the interface still work with ASIO4ALL uninstalled? If it does still work, then Windows may be installing a driver automatically for it. I'd also make sure to try the latest driver for the audio interface. If that doesn't help I'd contact Propellerhead as they will know about compatibility issues. I'd also try a different USB port. I've seen audio interfaces have issues when plugged into hubs or front panel USB connectors on the PC case. Back ports are always fully powered and your best option. If you are using USB3 ports, try USB2 ports if possible or vice versa.
