Router or Switch for online gaming

INFO:
I am currently using the router from my ISP
we are 2 persons (both Playstation 4)

my question is;
we have both ps4 cabled directly to the router
could a gaming switch give a better and more smooth gameplay or is it the same as the routers lan ports
and will a switch be a bad option when it is not about a LAN party?

or is a gaming router a better option (we don't use wifi for gaming)?

I hope someone can help

There is nothing a router can do to fix problem outside of your house. The router itself seldom causes any issues.

There is not some magic "gaming" router. It can do nothing to fix problems in the internet outside your house. It can not magically decrease the latency since most a function of distance. The only thing a router can do is if you were overloading your internet connection.

That really is not a router problem it is a USER problem. You would need to get a agreement on who can use internet when and how much bandwidth they can use. Some routers have some limited ability to enforce such agreements. The only real fix to a over used internet connection is to buy more bandwidth from the ISP.

If all you are doing...

So a switch is really like a hub for connections, think of it like a powerstrip, most commercially available routers have a built-in switch so you should not have to get a switch. If you were looking to make the gaming smoother a better router or a better plan (make sure you are using Cat 5e (at least) as well) would be a better buy.

I was saying possibly upgrading his current router/modem would possibly help but I would agree.

i am getting a 100/25 connection from my ISP but I want to optimize my console connection for gaming

If you could take the router apart you would see a cpu chip that does the router and a 5 port switch chip. 1 port of the 5 port switch goes to the router chip the other 4 go to the external lan ports. Some of the more modern devices it is only 1 chip but it still logically functions as 2.

So in effect you already have a switch connecting your 2 game machines it is just hidden in the router box. Almost all switching chips can run all ports at 1gbit up and 1gbit down all at the same time. The switch will never be the bottleneck.

ok, so for me to understand it correctly;
a new router with other specs and other settings you can configure will not have any impact on my lan gaming?
neither a switch with other settings ?

If you really mean "LAN" then the traffic never leaves your house and you should never see any lag or delays.

When you play online then you have added all kinds of things that can cause you problems. It is not likely it is your router.

The most common problem is something wrong with the connection to your house which your ISP should be able to fix. There also could be some issue in path to the game server but there is little you can do about that.

okay thanks for the explanation
so in your opinion a router with better (or more settings) will not be necessary or have any impact?

If all you are doing is running a couple gaming consoles it is unlikely you are over utilizing your internet connection. Games use very little bandwidth other than say when you download them.
