Hello I just purchased an Asrock G41m-S3 motherboard so that I can overclock my prebuilt pc I got from a friend for free. It has a q8300 and a AMD 4870.
I am now having trouble finding ram that works in the motherboard, since I noticed too late that this motherboard supports only ddr3 memory where as the old one has ddr2. I tried my friends' Hyper x Fury ddr3 1600 2x 4GB RAM and it just doesnt post. The fans spin at max but nothing else happens.
When no ram is installed it beeps 3 times, so I guess the motherboard isn't dead.
I found some info about single rank and dual rank memory and the Hyper X is single rank so maybe that's it?

Should I return the motherboard or should I try to find dual rank ram?

Solution
Yes, the MB (g41 chipset) does not work with any Hyper x Fury ddr3, which only work with the newer generation MB. You should get other brands, like from crucial http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/ASRock/g41m-s3 or from corsair http://www.corsair.com/en-us/memoryfinder?type=motherboard&slug=ASRock-G41M-S3

Keep in mind, for the intel old MB, they are very picky for RAM, you should try use the Asrock memory QVL (Qualified Vendor List) to find the RAM, or the memory finder, like the crucial or corsair memory finder.
