Trying to transfer files from an old laptop hard drive to my Desktop

I have an old laptop that was dropped. I bought a USB to SATA/IDE converter. The harddrive powered up and is running smoothly, no grinding, clicking, or anything. I connected the harddrive to my desktop. My desktop reads the harddrive. When I try to open the harddrive my computer starts to slow down. Is this because of the size of the harddrive? Is there a way I can access only parts of the harddrive instead of my desktop trying to read the entire thing? I am decent with computers but I am no expert.

EDIT: I should mention that it causes my desktop so slow down until it freezes.

Solution
Can you try what I suggested?

Disconnect all other drives on the desktop except the one with the operating system. Connect your laptop drive to a SATA cable. Connect the other end to you motherboard.

Go into BIOS and make sure it's set to boot from the original desktop drive. While you're there, check to see if your laptop drive is recognized. It should be.

Then let it boot up and try your file transfer.

The OS of the HD is different from the OS on my PC. Does that make a difference of I try that? Also my PC is dual booted with Linux and I've tried to mount it there to no success.

Update: I did get it to pick up and in Disk Management it said it was healthy. I was able to open it. When I opened a folder things slowed and frozen up.
Not sure what's going on.

I'm wondering if the laptop's hard-drive's performance is less than ideal. Does this device have data you want to save? If yes, as soon as practical, add that data to your backup routine (on other external media).
