Higher temps after several new attempts at replacing thermal paste

I decided it was time to clean the old paste of my cpu. I took a barely damp cloth (barely moist) and cleaned of the old paste. Then I dried of the CPU several times and just let it sit for 10 minutes. Now, after booting up my pc, the cpu was idling at 35 instead of the previous temp at 25. This got me worried, so i took of the cooler, cleaned both the cpu and cooler, this time with some 90% alcohol i had lying around. I took my time, applied a pea sized dot and reattached the cooler carefully to insure equal spread. No change in temps, still running at 35 idle. Im really worried now, have I ruined the cpu with water?

Glad you were successful at troubleshooting this yourself. Although you can get away with a water-damp cloth if you have enough experience, its best to keep a few alcohol swabs handy (and for the medicine cabinet too) for this purpose. Enjoy your headshots.

CPU now runs 10 to 15 degrees hotter under load aswell. (65 - 70 degrees in CS:GO, old - 50) The CPU also runs hot during boot and shutdown (Fans spin at 100% from time to time). Temeprature fluctautes between 40 and 50, maybe even 60 now when just opening chrome...

I figured out, there were 2 reasons:

- CPU cooler not properly adjusted; Two scews were loose, therefore the cooler was not properly seated.
- I didnt use enough cooling paste. I used a bit more now, and also tried the x - pattern (applying thin lines in an x pattern)

Now my 4790k is back idling at 25 degrees and maxing out at 55 (CS:GO) :D
