Hello everyone!

This is my build:

Operating System
Windows 10 Home 64-bit

CPU
Intel Core i7 6700K @ 4.00GHz
Skylake 14nm Technology

Motherboard
MSI Z170A GAMING M5 (MS-7977)

Graphics
ROG PG278Q (2560x1440@59Hz)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti (Gigabyte)

Storage
232GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB (SSD)
931GB Western Digital WDC WD1003FZEX-00MK2A0

PSU

This issue started on its own yesterday, after 2 years of PC running smooth.

Basically, when i try to play a game, in this case Overwatch, at my normal settings, everything on low and around 250-300 fps, fps start fluctuating really hard between that and 90-100, mostly staying at the 100s.

Afterburner gives me those results: https://imgur.com/gallery/lJ50o

Those above are from running the game at 1920x1080 resolution instead of 2560x1440, the spikes/drops are usually much more sever/quick in the latter

As an added detail, whenever my fps drop static(?) lines start flickering on the monitor. Then they disappear when fps goes down to 80-100, and reapper when fps goes back up and then back down

Took some tests in another forum i posted in(i run 3DMark Firestrike), maybe they can show something valuable:

3DMark [Compare Results Online] : https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/25483100

HWI Screenshots : https://imgur.com/gallery/5EdU3

I already tried a full windows reinstall, driver reinstall, Nvidia Panel control power settings, windows power settings, and nothing til now seems to work.

I really don't understand what the heck is going on, since i played the day before those issues started showing and i had no problems

Thanks to anyone who'll answer!

In the sense that the MB is overheating or something? That doesn't seem to be the case, tho, since it seems to sit at way less than 60° and the CPU cores (looking at HWI) seem to be way off their threshold

it could be a faulty capacitor or something. Whenever ive seen strange lines, assuming its not software (dont forget to validate the games files in steam, under the games properties) which youve seem to have crossed out, its a hardware fault.

^ Agreed. Sounds like the card is dying. If it's still under warranty you may want to look into RMAing it. Those are classic symptoms.

Yep, think its the graphics card.
Sorry i misread the OP, i thought it was an MSI card, thats why i initially referred you to their forums.

Usually hardware faults are DOA, if it works out of the box it'll work for many years. Youve hit the unlucky jackpot.
My anecdotal: Ive had gigabyte GPUs in the past, such as the 8800gts. But recently going from an MSI 980ti to a Gigabyte windforce 1080 then back to a MSI 1080ti - the gigabyte was noticably cheap n nasty in quality. Looks dont maketh performance but one thing it did was this annoying intermittent fan whistle/flutter up n down, even in idle browsing the web. My PC is silent so youd notice it.
The MSI gaming x cards are perfect.

I still recommend cheap brands such as zotac or palit, just so people can get the relevant GPU chip, but if price is comparable next time get an asus, evga or msi GPU.
(also off gigabyte mobos, after using them exclusivley since the 90s, quality control has slipped)

Crap :(

No chance it could be something else, looking at the graphs? It just seems so strange how i'm capable of playing Overwatch at Ultra/2560x1440/60 fps, or 144 capped/2560x1440, or in any other way that is both fps and resolution intensive without (too many) weird things happening

I also just tried running Witcher 3 and fps seemed to cap itself at 30-40, no matter the settings options. 1st time i tried running the game the fps even went lower after i went from Ultra to High settings (from 45 to around 30-35)

Question from Archangel8424 : "Core Clock drops and causes fps to lower"

This is a continuation of my problem from here

I still have fluctuation in GPU power, core clock and memory clock that cause severe fps drops, but i just found out that if i try to play on 1920x1080 instead of my monitor's native resolution of 2560x1440 most of the issues go away

Now the thing is, i tried messing around in The Witcher 3 on Ultra for a while to see if the FPS stayed stable at 65-75, and after a few minutes they dropped from that to around 50-60 with the core clock value in Afterburner going from 1250 to around 800. Restarting the game got me back the fps, but the issue presented itself again after a few minutes. What gives?

Is this related to my previous issue or something i can solve?

Funny - I have basically the same exact system that you do. Same processor power and 980Ti card and RAM.

I recently downloaded a video that was really high resolution - "5K". It's 60fps at 2700p. It's 5408 x 2704. Bit rate is 60302 kbps But this is the first time I've had trouble playing a video. It gets pixelated and stutters.

I wonder if my card has reached a limit in terms of what resolution it can play?

Or do I need to update a driver or update codec settings somehow?
If you find a solution please post.

More likely too high bitrate. Probably the HDD or SSD you're playing from is too slow to keep up. Doesn't sound like it would be the graphics card.
