Reducing Ping-Spikes in-game

I am using a wired connection to my router but I still get so much lag sometimes that i cant even open the game up. Is there anyway on how I can reduce the chance of me getting lag spikes besides? Perhaps I should buy a better router?


* I am currently using a 300Mbps Wireless N Router TL-WR840N but I am going to buy a new router in the range of dual-band ac1200 ( is this a good choice) after the new internet plan has been installed
* My current data plan is 15Mbps no data cap (DSL) BUT I am soon going to switch to a 50Mbps (FIBER) no data cap plan

ALSO: what benefits does fiber give me in terms of gaming?

Well definitely switch the router if you ever do anything wirelessly. If wired if should be OK just make sure your firmware is current.
I would still look at a more gaming focus router. Toms has great reviews to help you select one.
Upgrading your connection at home to Fiber will help alot unless your provider uses some off topology setup or does traffic shaping which you will never be able to prove without running two separate providers at the same time. With DSL you shouldnt get spikes from the network as it is a dedicated link. Do you have other things connected to your internet feed. Make sure you dont have any service running when gaming like updates and such and make sure you have the latest drivers for ALL of your hardware.
