Hello, I have been trying for hours to understand what memory I need.

The computer is three or four years old. It is an HP Z230 with a I7 4790 processor. Two slots are taken up by 8 gb of memory, I what to add 8 gb more.

The manual says :"i5/i7 processors only support non-ECC memory"

Then it starts talking about CTO and AMO .... hmmmmm??????

It lists "DDR3-1600 non-ECC RAM" in one spot and "DDR3-1600-nECC RAM" in another spot ... are these the same?

That is all they list.

When I start looking on the web there are soooooo many chooses. Of coarse I want to spend the minimum I have to. Some lists "PC3-12800" .. some says PC3-12800R ... some say 1.35 volt and others 1.5 volt ....

Then I haven't even gotten into CAS ... I have not idea what this means!

Price seems to be from about $40 ( $20 per 4 gb stick) to $150!

Can someone please straighten me out!

If I go on Amazon or Ebay, what do I look for? Doesn't have to be new ... just decent quality.

What do I need to work with this machine?

Thanks so very much .... Mike

Here you go (as long as you put in the correct model of your computer.

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/hp-z230-tower

IF you want a easy one that site will give you what you need. YOU can always see if the prices are cheaper for the model you wnat. on a different site.

I would get this one http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/hp-z230-tower/CT9383256
OR if you want 16GB (I would recomend) http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/hp-z230-tower/CT7345515

ALSO, dont mix and match ram.. it causes issues (most of the time). You could try the 8GB pair but I would just get the 16GB pair as it will work kinda thing.. If you get the 8GB kit it may not work with the other memory you currently have.

You are awesome! ... to for this memory I am looking at about $80.

Not to sound cheap but money is very tight (my wife is disabled, heck I drive a 31 year old truck) ...long story but this computer (I am just about to buy it off ebay for $230 plus $34 shipping ... $265 ) is to replace a 10 year old one that just died (literally has a 2008 date on it). I am not a gamer ... but I do run a one person business and do some cadd. multi-media, ... a little bit of everything.

Is there any used memory that you could recommend?

I just looked on ebay ... I found one (actually the only one .. the others came close to the price of new memory) ... is this the same stuff:

http://

I looked on Amazon and saw nothing much cheaper.

Just trying to save a few dollars if I can.

Thanks so very much again .... Mike

Help!

I just got a note from a friend who said I can't just add another 8 gig of memory! He said I would need to pull out and throw away the 8 gig in the machine and add a "matched set" of either four 4 gig sticks or two 8 gig sticks!

Is this true???????

Big difference between adding $80 and adding $160 to the cost of the computer!

Thanks .... Mike

Looking at the new Crucial memory, I was about to say I just can't afford this computer .... 16 gig would be about $160!

BUT .... looking at ebay ....

Could you tell me if either of these two would work? I tried to look for a HP part number for the required memory (looked through the two manuals found online) but could not find a part number.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Micron-16G...572986?hash=item56aa6ec2ba:g:t4sAAOSwVtZaEzZ2

https://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Ramaxel-...312073444686?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

At $100 ... it is only $20 more then I was going to pay for 8 gig of new crucial memory.

Thanks so much again for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Save me from a big mistake!

Mike
