Hi

New guy here, with a question, hope someone can help.
I have a Toshiba Satalite L300 Laptop 32bit with 2 gb ram installed.
I was thinking about adding 2 x 2gb bringing it up to 4gb..but i read somewhare people were
having issues with the maximum of 4gb installed, that 3gb is the maximum really.
Is this true ?, and if so ,is it worth adding 1gb more bringing it up to 3gb.
Thought it best to ask, before going ahead.
Any advice is much appretiated.

cheers
Brian

Brian, The problem is the 32Bit version of the OS not the laptop its self. Simply put the OS can not see or make use of more than about 3GB of the 4 there are various schools of thought that say you can use more but in practice you could go up to 4GB let the OS use as much as it can and enjoy a small boost to performance. Just make sure you get the right DDR2 modules.

if you let me know which model L300 I can look up the spec of RAM it can use for you.

32bit OS are limited to a TOTAL addressing of 4GB of memory. When you install 4GB of memory you will see anything from 2.8-3.8 GB available depending on the system resources needed to run the computer. Being limited to 3.5GB of memory is pretty common on 32bit systems.

Integrated graphics will also consume some, so it can be useful to add more ram then the system can see, just so that you free up some more for your applications.

You can pick up this RAM on eBay fairly cheap just make sure its this spec:

DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 200-pin SODIMM

Key things to look out for there are DDR2 800MHz and SODIMM your machine wont recognise DDR3 or DDR4, and anything over 800MHz it either wont register it (worst case) or it might work with faster 1333Mhz stuff but it will still only run @ 800Mhz
