Hello,

I purchased a motherboard and cpu off ebay and set it all up. I then put the 2x 3200mhz + 2x 3000mhz ram into my Asus x99-a and it not showing 2 of the stick in my bios unless I put all the sticks in the 4 slots in either a1, a2, b1, b2 or d2, d1, c1, c2. If I put the ram in quad channel a1, b1, d1, c1 only 2 sticks show. Anyone know why ? My previous motherboard and cpu was Asus z170-a and i7 6700k, never had this issue on that board.

When they're in quad channel they have to match voltage, speed and timings. It's the subtimings where you can run into problems when mixing. If they work by themselves and in all the slots just not when matched I'd suspect that's where the problem is.

You can even run into problems buying 2 kits of the same model number from the same manufacturer. Different production runs can use different ICs making the subtimings incompatible. Always best to buy matched sets as they're guaranteed to be identical.

You're mixing memory. Memory is sold in matched sets for a reason. It's guaranteed to work that way.

So it not to do with the motherboard or cpu ? Just need too make sure as I purchased them off ebay and would need to return them soonish if it due to either of them.

It's most likely the memory. Try the 3200 by itself and the 3000 by itself. If both work by themselves then it's a mixing issue.

They all work by them self and they all work when all on the same side. It only quad channel where 3 out of the 4 show. At the moment it showing A1, B1, C1 but no D1 but if I put the 4 pieces of ram into slots c1, c2, D1, d2 then all show up in the bios. If it was a speed difference issue then would 2 not show up when in c1, c2, d1, d2 ? Ram showing as 2133mhz speed in the bios.

I can get 1 3200mhz and 1 3000mhz to show up in dual channel. Would this not be possible if different speed mean they can not run together or is that just a quad channel thing

That's not right at all. Memory errors can take many, many different forms. As I said above if the sticks work individually or as pairs in every slot but they don't work when matched then it's a compatibility issue.

OK cool sound like we have nailed it down to the different speed of the memory causing issue while in quad channel. Will get 4x8gb of 2400mhz at some point. What the difference in performance between me having them in a1, a2, b1, b2 slots compared to quad channel?

Depends entirely on what you're doing. Quad channel mode increases available bandwidth just like dual channel does. Not all applications are affected by memory though. The last real world tests I saw showed dual channel which doubles bandwidth from a single stick increasing overall system performance about ~5%-7%. Quad channel doubles the bandwidth again over dual channel. But certain apps will see much more of an increase and some won't see any gains at all.

I got 2x16gb 3000mhz stick I purchased and was going to send them back as I heard it not the best for x99 motherboard. What is your take on the performance difference between quad channel and dual channel? It not really for much gaming mostly a workstation working with multiple virtual machines.

Then you'll optimally want quad channel mode. Gaming is where the memory wouldn't matter very much. Sell everything you have an buy a matched quad channel set of 4 sticks if you can. I know it's a bad time right now due to the DRAM shortage. Prices are insane.
