How does one take a wifi signal and transfer it to another device?

Specifically, when one of the devices works with a wireless adapter and one doesn't, but the one that doesn't needs to work with the adapter. So the question is: How do you transfer the Internet signal between two machines?
I've seen it done, but I don't know how to replicate it. I've seen it done with a laptop and a desktop, the laptop being the device that gave Internet access to the desktop.
