I bought a motherboard (X299 SLI PLUS) stupidly thinking that it supported thunderbolt 3 VIA the USB-C connection at the back. Unfortunately, it does support thunderbolt 3, but only VIA an internal PCI card. This brings another PCI card taking up space in the card as well as a big, ugly cable that can't be hidden.

Is there any other way of having thunderbolt 3 speeds through the USB C connection on the back? An adapter of some kind? Any other ideas here? It's stressing me out as I need thunderbolt 3 access in my PC for work related files and I REALLY don't want a MAC.

I don't think there is anything you can plug into a USB3.x socket that will give you more than TB1 speeds and at a glance, I haven't had any luck finding such a thing either.

A PCIe card looks like your only real option. Still much cheaper than getting a Mac and creates a whole lot less clutter on your desk than a whole extra computer just for that purpose.
