Hi all!
I have a few questions about network switches. I am very much a newbie when it come to this stuff.
I was giving a NETGEAR 16 port gigabit Ethernet switch. Model JGS516.
I have xfinity as an ISP and use the modem/router all in one they
provide.
The xfinity is in the 2nd floor pc room. Was going to put the switch in the basement so I can easily put lines up to the rooms I want.

I would like to do something like this:

Internet
|
Xfinity modem/router — MyPC
|
Switch
|
Blu-ray, Steam Link, TV, kids rooms, garage, office, etc.

So my questions are:
1) The switch has no marked “in” port. (Like a Dlink router does with 1 input and 6 outputs)
Does it matter what port I plug into for the internet input from the xfinity box? (Port 1 vs port 12?)
2) Is just one input from the xfinity box good enough? I have 2 100 foot cat 6a network cables. I was going to just drop one to the switch. If I drop both and hook both to the switch will that make any difference at all in the speed of the devices/PCs connected to the switch for the internet?? Say for gaming/streaming?
3) In the future if I want better WiFi in the basement, can I hook up a WiFi range extender to the switch?

Thank you all for your knowledge and time teaching me about this stuff. My first networking adventure. Usually I just need one PC and WiFi. Ahh the growing family and gadgets. ;)

Solution
1. Correct. Generally I put the uplink cable in port 1, just for consistency. But it makes no difference.
2. Yes. Just one cable from the router.
3. Yes.
