How can I determine whether a certain internal HDD is compatible with my laptop?

I want to know whether I can safely use a Seagate Barracuda 5TB (model # ST5000LM000) on my HP ay-021ng laptop without facing any issues in the future. Are these even compatible with one another? How can I make sure and what sort of information should I specifically look at to evaluate compatibility in such a case?

Specs of the 5TB drive: here

HP notebook specs: here

I have already contacted both Seagate and HP and none of them has been of any help; they both told me to "try it at my own risk".

It's a question of z height, 7mm is the smallest, and so the 2TB drives in that range will fit, 9mm is the next up, and the 5TB drive you are referring to is 15mm, so it is highly unlikely that will fit as it is very tall, and would require enough empty space in the drive bay for another 7mm drive to fit.

Just to clarify one more point; I'll be replacing the original 1TB (that's currently inside the notebook) with the Seagate 5TB drive. Therefore, there will be only one drive in the laptop in the end.

Another question is whether the hardware on the HP notebook are capable of supporting a drive that large (5TB)?

Hey OP, 13thmonkey is correct, the ST5000LM000 will not physically fit inside a laptop because of the height of the drive, check out the following spec page. The BarraCuda drives that will fit your laptop are capacities 2TB and under.

You could alternatively go with a 2.5" FireCuda SSHD if you want an SSD cache for faster load-times of your most frequently accessed data. If you're just looking to get more capacity, then you could use a portable USB drive like the Backup Plus or Expansion lines.
