Today is a sad day for me... 1 hour ago my trustworthy 780 gave up in the middle of Stellaris. Only approx. half a year before retirement, since I was expecting to upgrade my rig with the arrival of the new generation of CPUs and GPUs. Unfortunately, there's been a change in plans.

The way I see it, I now have two options:

1. Get a replacement card and then sell it to upgrade again when new generation arrives.
2. Get a replacement card and keep it for a couple of years as my new primary gaming GPU.

Please help me choose what GPU would be the most optimal for 1080p gaming, at least better than what my 780 as supplied for the last 3 ½ years. Do I go for 1050Ti until new generation arrives? Or perhaps a 1060 for better performance until then? Or 1070 or higher, for a full investment?

Sadly for me, the prices have being trending upwards recently... because of bitmining and all that crap. So real good timing, thx gfx for giving up now, at the worst possible time.

Thank you for reading this and have a wonderful day.

It's unlikely we'll see much in the way of price reductions in the near future, maybe when Nvidia release Turing it'll take some of the heat off but that's some weeks away.
If you can stomach the current prices and have the same amount of patience as me-none-a new GTX1060 would be a pretty close match to the dead '780 and if you're sticking to a 1080 display the 3Gb version is up to the task and somewhat cheaper than the 6Gb card. Anything higher is an upgrade but the prices, as you're well aware, jump significantly once you go over GTX1060 performance making it a hard sell for someone who may be looking for a temporary solution.
With the above said, I'd be very tempted to look at a used card, maybe even another GTX780, and treating it as a placeholder until things settle down rather than paying well over the odds now and suffering the inevitable buyers remorse later.

I will most likely purchase a GTX 1060 6GB ROG Strix for performance and then wait at least 1 ½ years before upgrading that card to a new one. I guess I'll just suffer a bottleneck when I upgrade my CPU/Motherboard/RAM later this year...

What resolution are you playing at? If 1080p, I have a GTX 1050ti which seems to do fine. Also I know newegg had an RX 560 4gb for about 170. When I got my 1050ti it was 209, I think you can get them still for 219.

From what I can see the 1050ti trades blows with the 780. Sometimes beating it. The RX 560 4gb is slightly behind the 1050ti, but I think tends to do better in dx12 titles.

Personally, I'm running a 1050ti on a 1080p 60hz monitor and it does pretty decent. It even handles battlefield 1 on ultra settings decently.

I see where you are coming from though. If used cards were cheaper that would be one thing, but with even used cards being sky high, I would be leery because you don't know if they've been mined half to death.

It boils down to what you want to spend, if you want the cheapest way out, I would be tempted by the RX 560 4gb.

That way you don't have much invested and you could always drop the 560 out whatever card you buy on eBay to recoup some of your money when new cards arrive and hopefully prices settle down a little.

Thank you for your answer. I should propably have noted that I'm from Denmark. Here the RX 560 4GB is to be found at around 250 dollars at the moment and almost every graphics card for gaming is out of stock.

That is why I've decided to purchase an Asus GTX 1060 6GB ROG Strix to provide me with great performance forward for at least 2 years. Also possibly 1440p if I do happen to get a new monitor. The 1060 is almost 550 dollars here in Denmark, which may seem insane, but it is the best price seen here in months now. If only my 780 had died half a year ago, before all this cryptocurrency ruined the pricing of the market...

Thanks to all who contributed with answers, I hope you people have a lovely day!
