I7 6700k running overly hot (around 80 degrees on 40% load).

PC specs:
-i7 6700k (not overclocked)
-gigabyte G1 GTX 1060 6GB
-Asus Z270 Prime AR
-Crucial 2x8 GB DDR4 2400mhz
-EVGA G1 650w Gold
-240GB ssd (Operating system)
and most importantly:
-Cooler Master seidon 240p

I have had my PC for about a year now and last night I was playing rainbow 6 when i noticed my fps dropping, so I opened speccy and saw that my CPU was around 70-80 degrees (which is obviously not good considering that my CPU was only on about 40% usage and I have supposedly pretty decent cooler). I quit the game and the temp immediately dropped back down to an idle of around 30 degrees. After observing the temperature for a few hours i noticed that it would spike up to 50 when ever I opened an app or waited for a page to load and sometimes even randomly when I wasn't even doing anything. I then tried to see if re-doing the thermal paste and leaving the front of my case open would effect anything (which it didn't). Finally I decided that it could be a virus so I ran a free antivirus test only to find that my CPU went up to 90 degrees, at that point I shut down the computer and now I am here.

Just wondering if it could be something wrong/badly designed about my cooler or problem with CPU or something.

I am planning to get a cheap stock cooler to see if that makes any difference, so will update then.

Reinstalling the cooler and thermal paste and making sure the pump is working would be my first steps.

That's way too hot. My 6700K at 4.6Ghz and 1.35v barely hits 70c when stress testing with Prime 95 and Intel Burn Test at the same time. I'm using a Phanteks PH TC14PE. A large air cooler comparable to a Noctua D14.

My guess is that your Mobo is set for auto-overclock-turbo, paired with an free overvolt of the cpu. Asus mobo are famous for this :) Go into BIOS/Uefi and lock the core volt manually.

Thanks, I will try that tomorrow. Although looking at task manager I can see that my CPU only goes up to 4.2Gghz which is the advertised boost clock or is that something else?

So do you think that it is something wrong/bad with my cooler?

Cool thanks. I have reapplied the thermal paste and unplugged all of the ports for the AIO. The light on the pump block is on also. Looking in the Bios it says that pump is spinning at 2 thousand and something rmp so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
