So i have been trying to install a Linux distro (Linux mint in this case) on my laptop, but i cant get it to work. So i have followed the instructions on how to create a bootable USB with the Linux distro on it but where i hit a wall is when i change boot order to the USB device. Every time i am greeted with a black screen with a single white line in the top left of the screen and the laptop freezes. I have tried waiting to see if anything happens, and i have tried keyboard commands but nothing is happening.

I have experienced this also. The issue for me seemed that GRUB didn't install properly. The process is a bit of work if you are unfamiliar. It's basically like this:

After Mint has been installed on your hard drive, boot again with the live USB.
Mount your hard drive so that the live session can access it
Run some commands to install grub

Here is the instructions:

If you have any doubts or questions about any of it, feel free to ask!
Default suggestion if you ask in any Linux forum is to check the control sum of the downloaded iso image.

Also - there is many software out there that is capable to make a bootable usb stick from an iso file. What are you using now? Suggest you try another one anyway.
