How to decrease gaming lag on poor wifi

I'm staying with a guest for the week, and I brought my gaming PC. The trouble is, their wifi is incredibly slow. I'm seeing very high pings and it's making the games unplayable. They have a modem provided to them by the cable company which is upstairs, while my PC is down in the basement. We are looking into purchasing some equipment to improve the signal. Either a signal booster or a second router. If I got another router, would I be able to connect it to my PC via ethernet and have it still run without interfering with their wifi?

Solution
How about do something other then playing games? visit / have fun.. UNLEss you are wanting to permenetly improve their network. then get a couple access points that are better then what they have now so like upstairs is one access point and then downstairs is another access point. Its not hard as a lot of different companies have wifi equipment that does this.
