Need help knowing if a cpu would work in my system

I currently have a pentium 3250 and a Asus b85m-g Motherboard

would a xeon 1231 v3 work due to them being way better and going for very cheap on ebay

specs
PSU: 650 watt 80+ certifaied
Gpu: 1050 ti
Ram: 1333 mhz 2x4 gb
HDD: 1tb 7200 rpm

Yes, that CPU is officially supported, but make sure your bios version is at least 0904.

Um, no you'll most likely need a workstation board for that CPU, the motherboard page doesn't state that it works with any Xeons or ECC memory.

Your motherboard supports 4th gen core I7's I5's and I3's so I would recommend you get an I5 or I7 of that generation.

He won't get to use ECC RAM and similar features, but Xeons, especially in the Sandy Bridge--Ivy Bridge--Haswell generations have long been recommended as alternative options in consumer boards.

The board did not support the Xeon CPU when it was initially released, but through bios updates it should support it.
ECC RAM wont work on it, but I dont think the OP has ECC RAM. The Xeon will support ECC RAM and non ECC RAM.

While this may not be the best board for a Xeon work station, the 1231 is really just a locked i7 CPU and it will be a nice bump from the Pentium that he already has.

I looked on the Motherboards website and under specifications it doesn't state it works with any Xeons, just Core I7 I5 I3 Pentium and the like, nothing about Xeons, I don't think it will work, since there won't be a BIOS update to support it. Also you can get a better experience out of an I7 overclocked, something B85 can do ish, it will support some overclocking but you can't change the voltages.

manged to pick one up the other day for 100 $ so I wonderd if I could use it

100 is a great price, apparently you have to go under the support tab to find the CPU's it works with, you know instead of the specifications tab where it states the CPUs it works with... Well, it should work, just update the BIOS first before putting in the new CPU.

Generally speaking, every motherboard manufacturer will keep an up-to-date list of officially supported CPUs and list the BIOS updates required to run those CPUs in the Support page. It's much trickier for people with pre-builts from OEMs as companies like Dell, hp, etc. tend to do a poor job supporting upgrades and frequently list little of this information. But you have what appears to be a normal ASUS retail motherboard, so compatibility is much less of a headache!

Actually, I find the HP does a better job at keeping compatible parts lists for most things than Dell. But yeah you should be fine with just a BIOS update.
