Is the optical network terminal waterproof?

So, a few months ago, frontier communications laid fiber optic cables in my neighborhood and we were quick to switch. after three years of comcast as our only option, frontier's FIOS service is a massive upgrade. But there is one potential problem. The install guy put a box in my office. I assumed it was the optical network terminal, but it was actually the power supply and battery backup box. The optical network terminal is in my backyard next my my houses circuit breaker. Maybe it's just me, but having something like that outside seems pretty odd. Is it resistant to things like rain, hail, extreme heat, extreme cold etc? Thanks!

Those outdoor wall mounted ONTs are designed to work in typical environmental extremes. It's normal to see these mounted outside.
It is likely because of the issues with extending fiber into someones house. Even the companies that put the ONT inside the house generally just drill though a exterior wall and put in the garage or something. Fiber very easy to break compared to ethernet or coax. It also takes a lot more skill to cut and terminate fiber. They likely want to save a little money not having to train their installers...beside the problems with customers messing with the actual fiber.

I don't think fiber optic cables are fragile. They aren't made the same way as the glass in your windows.

Take a fiber patch cable and wind it around your finger a couple of times and tell me that again. The bend radius is not very forgiving it is very easy to crack the fiber. They use armored fiber cable to avoid damage during installation but it is extremely stiff to prevent the over bending it and is a pain to install. The last couple of inches though is always at risk and it take almost nothing to destroy a fiber.

I don't know about that. There's a palm tree next door and when it's windy, the branches press down on the fiber optic cable very hard. It goes at least a foot downward. And yet our service remains completely normal.

LOL! Fiber is extremely fragile.
