Transplanting 10TB WD red NAS drive into a WD Easy Store USB case?

Over the last few months I purchased 5 WD 8Tb easy store USB drives.
I bought these, and "shucked" 4 of them for use in my Synology DS-918+ media NAS.
I got lucky; all 4 that I shucked contained the Red NAS drives, with the 256Mb cache :)

So I now have the majority of my movie/media collection loaded into the Synology and have used 7.2Tb of my ~20Tb capacity. I am estimating when finished I will end up using 8~9Tb.
I am currently backing this NAS up via USB 3.0 connection to my remaining 8Tb easy store drive.

Am wondering if the newly released WD Red 10Tb NAS drive could be used in one of my shucked cases, becoming a 10Tb portable drive for my future backup needs?
(according to the 2/27 article comparing the new WD 10Tb Red, to the WD 8Tb Red they are identical in every other way).

I think so. You would just have to try it. The case and board should be just a sata to usb converter card so any sata drive will work.

In the past i had a dead external usb cdrw, inside it's just a ide cdrw. I put a ide HDD in it and it worked fine as a external usb HDD.

However rather than my case where i was messing with worthless junk, your playing with a fancy new and expensive 10tb hdd. If you have a older sata drive that is not important i would try that first to see if it's just a hdd controller inside or made just for that drive.

It should work fine. I've swapped drives in OEM cases plenty of times. Never had a problem.

Looking at prices. My question would be why? The cheapest 8TB external drive I can find right now is $150. The cheapest 10TB internal is $308. You could purchase 16TB of backup storage for the price of 10TB. You'll have room to grow until you need more backup space.

Even if you stick with WD Easystore. 8TB runs $170 and the WD Red 10TB runs $365.

I agree with the economy of going with 2-8Tb drives for backup. However - I am looking for portable backup simplicity - something that I could store off-site, and bring back home home for a monthly backup,
