Can a M.2 2242 fit into a slot sized for a longer M.2 SSD?

I currently have a M.2 2242 SSD and am considering buying a laptop (MSI GS63VR) without the M.2 slot filled. The slot and card are both M-keyed so that isn't an issue. But the GS63VR has a longer slot (M.2 2280 I think?) so the screw hole isn't in the right place for the shorter 2242 card. Will it still be compatible?

Also in my previous laptop the M.2 was spring loaded much like a laptop SODIMM slot which made the M.2 SSD pop up when the screw is removed. Is this standard, and if so could I simply use a piece of non-conductive tape to hold the 2242 card in place on the MSI motherboard?

Solution
If there is not a screw hole in the proper location, you're asking for trouble.
Any tape you put on it will come off eventually.

Most M.2 port spaces have multiple holes for different length drives.
Verify before you buy.
