check for data fade

Hello,

How big of a problem is data fade? You know, data on magnetic media degrading over time, magnetic signals stored on magnetic media slowly dissipating? Is there anyway to check for data fade? I have a couple hard drives which have been idle for 4 years or so.

It is an issue, particularly with magnetically stored data (tape, diskettes, HDDs, etc). The length of time can vary widely, depending on the media.

Do you have the contents of the idle HDDs backed up elsewhere? If not, might be a good idea.

uh oh. no, only on my idle HDDs and a few flash drives. I believe that. I've been searching the tech support community for data fade but can find almost nothing about it.
