First of all thank you to aquascapesph! Inkscape is a very good free alternative to Corel Draw. Now I have a detailed map (which I imported) that I added borders and other labels also color coded.
Can someone please tell me how to save or copy this and then paste it onto a word document which I can then save to a PDF? The methods I have tried gives me a poor result that actually filled in all of the areas with solid colors. I need to see all of the details as the original.

Inkscape definitely can export as PNG.

Can you describe the steps you took when you got the poor results? Was there a particular step that resulted in the poor quality?

I would imagine that you'd do exactly what Alabalcho suggested. Export as PNG, copy/paste it into a word document, print to PDF. One thing to consider is the dimensions of the file in inkscape when you export it to PNG. If it's really large, bigger than the word document, it will get reduced to fit into the word document.
