SSD file transfer speed slow?

Hello all - let me preface this by saying that I'm new to having a SSD - my last laptop had a 7200rpm HD, also I'm not the most hardware-savy when it comes to computers

So I have a laptop with a 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, i7 8550U (mobile quad core), 12gb, etc. I've owned this machine for about two months. Start up speed is super fast, as well as opening programs and all that good stuff. The only thing is, I can't help but notice how slow file transfer speeds are. Maybe it's just because I had "rose colored lenses" when I first received it, but installing programs / file transferring seemed much faster when I first got it compared to now.

For example, when trying to transfer a 12gb folder from the C drive to the desktop, the transfer speeds jump from 390mb (which by itself seems pretty slow) to 190mb and back and forth for the whole time the folder is transferring. Idk if it is because I'm transferring on the same drive or something? Is this behavior generally normal?

First of all why are you transferring files from the C: drive to desktop? This doesn't speed up anything for you. Your desktop is likely already on the C: drive too. And what sort of transfer is it? It is a file copy or a file move? I would advise against unnecessary copying of files on your SSD, especially for file already on the SSD, e.g. file on your C: drive. This kind of action will accelerate your SSD's write cycles being worn out and wearing out your SSD.

i was only doing it as a test as i noticed speeds were jumping and i wanted to emulate the issue - which i now see is a bad idea lol thank you
