My pc is showing its age and sometimes slows down.

Its either upgrage or buy new.

My Spex AMD II x3 435, GA-MA74GMT-S2 Mboard, 4 GB Ram, HD 5570 Graphics Card.

I could upgrade the Ram to 8GB. Or add a Ryzen and new Motherboard???

Any ideas? Thanks

No, you can't just ad Ryzen and MB, need DDR4 RAM too.
For straight upgrade you could get a Phenom II x4 processor (like 960BE for instance), another 4GB of DDR3 RAM and (slightly) better GPU but that's not going to bring you anywhere close to even a most modest modern system.
AMD Ryzen/Raven Ridge APU 2200g or 2400g with any cheap AM4 motherboard and 8GB of DDR4 would make mince meat out of your system even updated like I said.

Bit over, but this should last some time:

Down the road, simply swap out the 8GB kit for a 16 GB, and the GPU too. PSU is very reliable here.

Later on, also consider a swap for the mobo.

Which is why I suggested a swap for the mobo.

For now, it should be okay. But it can be better. Rest of the components will last for a bit (except the 1050Ti perhaps).

He can reuse his drives and case. That saves a lot of money. Get a better board and bring the price down. New internals and a good bump in speed. but he's talking about buying used ram for £10 so I get the feeling he doesn't want to spend £500.

Wasting £10 on some old ram that won't work in a new system isn't a good idea either. When I built my rig I spend $750 just in the video card, monitors, and cables/adapters. I would have loved to have spent $400, but I needed to spend $750 in the end. If you want X, you need to spend money to get there. Limping along with patch work stuff isn't always the best idea.

I visited my local CEX and purchased a 4 GB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz 240 Pin Memory for £10. I now have 6GB, have ordered another 4GB from CEX so hope to get that over the next few days. Wast sure if it would work ok, but everything seems to be fine so far. Great News!!!
