Greetings, all!
I currently have the classic 3-bundle through my ISP (Atlantic Broadband)--internet, cable and phone--and like most people, am getting violated monthly on rental fees. I want to procure my own modem/router so the ISP can pound sand on the fees. BUT--the ISP-supplied modem is the venerable Arris TM822 with integrated RJ11 jack, and it seems impossible to find a new cable modem (preferably w/integrated router) that includes this port. So my question is, can I connect my phone to a standard Ethernet port, by way of a RJ45-RJ11 adapter, and have it work, or am I SOL?

Thanks!

Chuck

The ISP tends to be very picky about which cable modems you are allowed to use especially the ones that contain phone ports. You need to first check the list of modem they will activate.

As indicated you can not just convert rj11-rj45. You also are running a very special form of VoIP that is really a voice over cable. Pretty much it is part of the cable modem/router there are no external boxes ....even if they did sell them the cable company is unlikely to support them.

The option that most people choose is to just cancel the phone service and only use cell phones. If you need a land line they make VoIP adapters that plug into any router. You still must buy a "phone" contract with a some company but it will cost much...

The RJ11 ports for phone are analog ports. The RJ45 ethernet ports are digital. You can not connect a standard phone to an ethernet port on the router. To use the phone otpion, you have to have RJ11 ports. You could drop the ISP phone and get vonage or Ooma. Both of those options will connect to an RJ45 and provide rj11 ports for standard phone connectivity.

The fastest telephony modem you can get is the NETGEAR CM500V. It's about the only 16x4 one not saddled with the terrible Puma6 chipset.

If you won't be updating speeds anytime soon to 300+, the TM822g 8x4 modem you have is old but probably the most stable modem "with tel," and you know it is supported by your ISP.
