Hi everyone
I live in Australia and we have NBN right now (FTTP), but we are currently using the Telstra Gateway Max router(modem?), and I was told it wasn't that great. I want to know two things. Do I need a modem or a router. This is the thing we have in the garage (sorry for my lack of vocabulary on this topic, first time I've looked into modems and routers) https://10mates.com.au/troubleshooting/nbn-ntd-fttp.jpg
Also, because I do not know much about networking, what is the best router (or modem) on this website for FTTP NBN for $200 or under.
Thanks

Modem connects directly to the cable from the service provider. Router connects to the modem and provides either wired or wireless to your devices. Some modems have the router tech internally. Can you provide a direct link to the website?

Oh my god I'm so sorry I was writing a quick question before I had to go and I completely forgot it

Also is the box in the image provided a modem?
Sorry if that's a dumb question

Are you having issues with your internet connection or is there something you want to do but can't?
Most techies like to have their own equipment (separate router and modem) that they own because we can then do what we want with it and don't pay to rent equipment. For most non techies, what the service provider gives you works fine, so unless you are actually having issues I'd suggest not messing with it. Of course if you are out to learn all about how this stuff works and want to play around with it then by all means get your own modem and/or router and play!

Well yeah, we had a techie come around to fix our nbn as a rat chewed through the fibre lol. But because we pay a fair bit for the speed we want, the techie said the default router they give you isn't very good in comparison to the ones you can get. We have a Telstra Gateway Max, so could anyone tell me if a router for $200-$250 would be worth an upgrade? I'm specifically pointing at this https://www.centrecom.com.au/netgear-nighthawk-d7000-ac1900-adslvdsl-modem-router
Whether it is beneficial or not, can someone point out why, for future reference? Thanks
