Noticed these threads are a little old so I will run it by all of you again. Bought this Gateway FX 6840-15e, new, way back when. The motherboard is a mini I think, its about 10"x12".
I replaced the power supply with a TR2500W Thermaltake, and I put a XFX R9 270X 2GB DDR5 PCI-E graphics card in a few years back. I have tons of storage. I know I need a MB, RAM (at least 16gb), and a new processor. I use this guy as a gamer. The new "Wolfenstein" game crawls. If I can get it to run at all. I have been tinkering with PC's since the days of the "Timex Sinclair" and Radio Shacks "Color Computer". OK IM 58, I said it. I'm a BSME by trade so I love operating on these things. I don't want to throw a ton of cash into this thing. If I can get it to run my current games for somewhere under 8 Franklins that would be great. Is there any hope? Or am I dreaming.
Thanks everyone for you help!!
John

From that game review, you need a strong GPU, at least gtx1060 6GB or the Rx580. And I don't know what kind the OS you had, if you had the one from gateway, you will need the a new windows OS, because you can't use the OEM version in the retail brand MB anymore. Also you will need the new case, the new MB may or may not fit into the gateway case. One more recommend to buy good brand PSU, forget about the TR2 500W.

Keep in mind, the total price does not include the OS, if you add it in, you know the price will be little bit over your budget.

For AMD PC, you may double check the detail for BIOS update. https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-will-lend-you-an-older-processor-to-update-your-bios-to-support-a-ryzen-apu/

Thanks for the input!! I am using Windows 7 at the moment but I have a new copy of windows 10 pro that I can dust off (even though I hate windows 10) I have other cases I could use if the gateway doesn't work. Again thanks for everything!!
