I am extremely novice when it comes to computers but I am trying to figure this out because I need faster speeds lol. So my understand is that my CPU ASROCK N68C-S UCC is compatible with G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK. The current RAM in my CPU is 2 Samsung 1GB 1RX8 PC2-5300U-555-12-ZZ. Should I replace the old RAM with the new RAM since the brands are different or can I add the G Skill memory in addition without any problems? Thanks for listening.

Solution
Brands do not matter that much, but the specs matter.

Adding PC2-5300 and PC2-8500 will make the memory system to operate all at PC2-5300 instead of operating at PC2-8500. So the best option is to remove the PC2-5300 and add the G Skill for it to operate at PC2-8500.

And PC2-8500 (1066MHz) is supported with AM3 / AM2+ processors only, on this motherboard.

Wait so I thought the 8500 hundred is what I needed right? I am confused because I read an article here at:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/289314-30-what-asrock... and thought thats what I need..

I have AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.81GHz. What memory would I need?

This motherboard has four slots.

Two slots for DDR3 type memory 2x4GB = 8GB
and
Two slots for DDR2 type memory. 2x4GB = 8GB Max

Only one type memory can be used (two slots). 8GB Max
So either choose DDR2 1066***/800/667/533 or DDR3 1600/1333/1066/800.
*** DDR2 1066MHz speed memory will work only if you have a AM3 / AM2+ processor.
DDR2 1066MHz (PC2-8500) is the fastest speed available.
1066MHz (PC3-8500) speed memory is also available in DDR3. Fastest DDR3 supported by this Motherboard is 1600MHz (PC3-12800).

I did not notice the combo (DDR2/DDR3) memory supported by this motherboard. So, you have two options.

1) Remove existing DDR2 memory and replace with faster 4GB x 2 DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHz) or 4GB x 2 DDR2 PC2-8500 (1066MHz supported by AM3 / AM2+ processors only)

2) Remove existing DDR2 memory but go for the DDR3 Memory (Supported by AM3+ processors only)
Choose 4GB x 2 DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz memory.

I recommend the 2nd option (best) if you have AM3+ processor.

Hope this helps!
