Phenom X4 9950 and 220 Watts PSU ?

Hello,

A friend of mine gave me his computer for some basic maintenance, and possibly upgrade it.

The computer is a Lenovo ThinkCentre A61 Type 9144 A22

- AMD Sempron 3600+ (1 core, 2 ghz)
- 2 gb ram DDR2
- HDD 80 gb 7.2 K RPM
-DVD ROM
- PSU 220 W
- Built in ATI X1250 chipset for Graphics

I already added an extra 2 gb ram (2x 1gb, pc 5300), so it has 4 gb ram DDR2.

I found on the internet that I could upgrade the CPU, and while reinstalling the whole system, I found out the computer could REALLY use an upgrade. I found this :

AMD Phenom X4 9950. But 125 Watts TDP. I'm no expert in this, but I know Sempron 3600+ has 25 watts TDP.

I understand the Phenom will consume more power, and therefore I would like to know if the OEM PSU (220 W) would do the job, or if I should consider buying/finding another PSU, and if so, which one would fit in the ThinkCentre A61.

Can you please help me ? Thanks in advance :)

Wait a minute... I'm an idiot.
There's the 3600+ mobile and desktop. This IS for the desktop, right? The mobile's tdp is 25w, but desktop's is 59.
Then you could do the Athlon 64 X2 5000+.

When a cpu with a tdp higher than what the motherboard can handle is used, the power draw can overload the vrms and burn them out = ded mobo. A common issue was with people trying to use FX 9xxx series cpus with crap motherboards.

The ram you added, does it at least have the same speed and timings? If not, you've got a problem.
Cpu can likely NOT be upgraded if it's an OEM motherboard.
The psu, ESPECIALLY the mobo's vrms won't handle that 9950. 125w from 25w is fricking huge. You'd kill the board.
I believe ram is all you can do for an 'upgrade', due to that OEM board. Those things tend to be gimped on purpose to force the user to spend more for an actual upgrade.

Yes, they do have the same speed and timings, I have checked and they are identical (except for memory size of course, 2x1 + 1x2, and the 2x 1gb set on the same colour on the mobo).

I have checked on the manual of the motherboard, it can take AM2 and is "phenom ready". At the moment they made the manual, it said it could be upgraded to Athlon 6400+ (which also has 125 TPD).

The computer won't be used for "gaming" or intensive usage, I think the quad core is just necessary to make windows 7 family premium work more smoothly for basic office work + web browsing.

I found also same dimensions PSU with 300 W capability on the internet, also from a ThinkCentre.

When you say it would "kill" the mobo, you mean the motherboard is not fit for this kind of upgrade at all ? It's a 2006 computer, it used to be a period when we could upgrade computers pretty easily, rather than now with all the soldered stuff.

Thanks for your help by the way :)
